Max Cycling

Key takeaway: The forecast allows the user to choose a maximum number of cycles per year and per day, aligning with battery warranty terms while preserving flexibility to customise limits.

To align with most battery warranties, the forecast allows the user to choose a maximum number of cycles per year as well as maximum number of cycles per day.

Annual cycling limits

The battery dispatch model is initially run with just the daily cycle limit. The dispatch is then split into ‘subcycles’, defined as 1 hour of charging and discharging (plus efficiency losses), and the revenue per MWh of each subcycle is calculated. Finally, the least profitable subcycles are removed until the annual cycling is below the chosen limit. This results in a distribution of cycling with some days cycling up to or close to the max daily limit, but some days cycling very small amounts.

This does give the battery ‘perfect’ visibility of which subcycles are the least profitable, but unprofitable subcycles are far easier to predict than the most profitable subcycles, so this foresight will have very minimal impact on revenues.
